It is no secret that potential clients are looking on the Internet, searching Google, before hiring lawyers. The problem is broader than just having a decent website (which is essential, but not sufficient). You need to manage your Online Reputation. Attorney Jonathan Frieden has some good suggestions for how to manage your online reputation based on a presentation he made to the DC Bar. Mr. Frieden suggests a practical two step approach. 1) know what is being said about you online and 2) take control by publishing high quality material online. For the full article: E-Commerce Law: Take Control of Your Online Reputation. If it has not been obvious before, it is increasingly obvious that any marketing plan for a lawyer, and particularly a solo or small firm lawyer must include an Internet strategy. Rather than a burden, this should be seen as an opportunity. You may not have the money to buy a big ad at the airport like the Big Firms - but you can create an Internet presence that rivals if not exceeds the Big Firms. This is a leveling of the playing field. None of that matters, however, if you do not first know what your online reputation is (start doing those Google searches). That's such a good and easy place to start, and if you aren't coming up with much of an online reputation, it is time to get working on that second part. More on that later. - Peter H. Berge
