SEO for the Small Firm

I recently sat on a panel about creating a law firm website for a Minnesota CLE program How to Start a Law Firm.  The question that seemed most on people's minds was, "How do I get my site ranked higher on Google?"

That is, of course, a question of the black art of Search Engine Optimization (SEO).  There are are a lot of people selling snake oil on this subject and a lot of people who do ethically suspect things like keyword stuffing, hidden text, and creating multiple phoney linking sites to make it appear that your site has more Google-juice.

The truth is, you can do a lot yourself to boost your sites ranking in Google.  Google even tells you how:  Google's Search Engine Optimization Starter Guide

Another great article for lawyers thinking about how they can avoid the snake oil and get real SEO that works is The Myth of SEO and How to Do-It-Yourself from the Firm Marketing blog.  The Firm Marketing blog folks recommend:

  • Use Tags
  • Use Keywords
  • Have Good URL Links
  • Have a Site Map
  • Create Easier Navigation
  • Use Google Analytics
  • Have Webmaster Tools
  • Use a Website Optimizer Tool

For the compete article and explanations about how you can implement all of these things on your website, go to:  The Myth of SEO and How to Do-It-Yourself.
