Recommending Matt Homann - LexThink & the (non)billable hour

If you do not know of Matt Homann and you are not subscribing to his blog "the (non)billable hour," or following him on Twitter, you should be.

I had the pleasure of sitting down for dinner with Matt and Minnesota CLE's Executive Director, Frank Harris.  We had a fabulous chat. Matt is doing a lot of thinking about innovative ways that lawyers can and should be working.  One of Matt's consistent themes is that lawyers do a terrible job of customer service and if they would just think about things from their customer's (Matt doesn't like the word "client"!) point of view they would change much of what they do.  A great example of that is his Ten Rules of Client Service.

Matt is also doing a lot of sharing of his ideas.  His blog, "the (non)billable hour," consistently challenges the assumptions of lawyers and the legal system.  Some of his thoughts will be considered quite radical like, Let Your Clients Set Your Price.  A lot of his thoughts are eminently practical like, Replace "Fiance" with "Client." ("If your fiance does something that bothers you before you're married, it will bother you ten times more after you're married.").

We (that me and the rest of my colleagues at my day job with Minnesota CLE) are really looking forward to having Matt as one of our speakers for the Strategic Solutions for Solo & Small Firms program in Duluth.  Matt will be giving two keynote speeches, one on Innovation and another on How to Get Away from Hourly Billing.  Matt will also be doing some smaller breakout sessions.

I highly recommend that you follow Matt either on his blog, "the (non)billable hour," or on Twitter...or maybe even both!
