Facebook Privacy Settings

More and more lawyers are using Facebook - indeed, more and more adults are using Facebook.  The Facebook demographic has gotten decidedly older in just the last six months.  If you are using it, you need to get familiar, right away, with Facebook's security options.

Fortunately, there is help.  AllFacebook, which is a good resource for Facebook information, has recently posted a great article:  10 Privacy Settings Every Facebook User Should Know.  These include:

  1. Use your Friends list
  2. Removing yourself from Facebook search results
  3. Remove yourself from Google
  4. Avoid photo/video tag mistakes
  5. Protect your albums
  6. Prevent stories from showing up on new feeds
  7. Protect against published applications stories
  8. Make your contact information private
  9. Avoid embarassing wall photos
  10. Keep your friendships private

A lot of this depends on your intended use of Facebook.  If you are actually trying to network professionally via Facebook, you probably don't want to remove yourself from Google, you probably want to get higher on Google.  You probably definitely want to be very careful about published applications.  The article uses the infamous story of an "[insert name here] is having sex!" application (no joke, it is a real Facebook application!) that you probably don't want associated with any professional (and probably not any personal) Facebook page.

I'd love to hear your comments about how your are using (or why you aren't using) Facebook.
