Back in the old days, law firms were built on "old-boy networks" and schmoozing over cocktails at the golf course. But those methods are no longer in Vogue in the 21st century. Instead despite firms closing and laying off attorneys daily, there are firms who are seizing the marketing opportunities. These firms are discussing about profile building, and brand equity rather than gin and tonic. They understand differentiating yourself/law firm is very important. Differentiation helps not only with bringing in new clients BUT helps with attracting and retaining good staff.

Is Paying Associates Not to Work a Smart Big Firm Move?

Not long ago I questioned the wisdom of big firms paying associates $80,000 not to work.  The Snark from the Fulton County Daily Report (on Law.com) couldn't have said it better:

Big Law finally gets it. The days of hiking Cog salaries, weeklong retreats to mountain spas and lunchtime golf outings are over. Firms can no longer leapfrog down the path of highest-paid first-years. It is time to get serious, trim the budget and show clients we aren't wasting their ever-decreasing fees on lavish perks.

Here is the picture.  Skadden Arps associate Heather Eisenlord, bespectacled, pencil in mouth, wondering what she is going to do because the firm doesn't have enough work to keep her busy this next year.  What's a poor associate to do?  Take a globe trotting trip with the $80,000 she is going to be paid for not working this next year!
