If you do any sizable amount of work in Federal Court, you are at least familiar with, if you don't swear by (and/or at) PACER. While useful, PACER is old, clunky, and expensive. While many PACER documents are now available free on-line, finding them is not an easy task.
Enter RECAP, a Firefox extension meant to give you easy access to the PACER documents available free on line. Recap is: a project of the Center for Information Technology Policy at Princeton University. It is one of several projects that harness the power of the web to increase government transparency. Some of the driving principles behind the project can be found in the recent paper, Government Data and the Invisible Hand. RECAP was developed by Harlan Yu, Steve Schultze, and Timothy B. Lee. The project is led by Prof. Ed Felten. You can contact us at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . What RECAP does is notify you if you are about to download a document from PACER that is available free on-line:
If that sounds good, give RECAP a try and let me know how it works for you by leaving a comment. - Peter H. Berge
