Moving to Windows 7?

Are you thinking about moving to Windows 7?  If so, you will want to read Dennis Kennedy's latest in the ABA Journal:  Lucky No. 7?

I haven't even seen Windows 7 yet and while I use Windows XP every work day, I spend most of my personal computer life on Apple's OS-X operating system.  My friend Sam Glover from The Lawyerist, however, has been using it from Beta days and has spoken quite highly of it.  Given how "Mac-like" Windows 7 sounds, I suspect I would like it - heck, I have no great complaints with Windows XP which has been working just fine for me.  From that perspective, I couldn't agree with Dennis Kennedy's "money statement" more:

My perspective on operating systems is that they are simply platforms for running what I really care about—applications. The more transparent and unobtrusive the operating system is, the better I like it. And Microsoft seems to have succeeded in making Windows a more transparent operating system than ever before.

Also, the release of Windows 7 has raised the question of whether we are seeing the last major desktop operating system release. As people use the Internet for more applications, as in “software as a service” or cloud computing, the browser becomes the most important software on a computer. And browsers run on any operating system. Meanwhile, smartphones have also become an important computing platform.

I'm using Windows at work not just because that's what we generally run on at Minnesota CLE (though not exclusively) but because the applications I need to run to access our databases and be compatible with others (both in and outside the organization) are typically Windows oriented.  Thus it is just easier.  At home, I am mainly doing graphics oriented photography projects and I just have liked my options in the Mac world better (thought there are now good options in the Windows world with Photoshop and Lightroom).  I do think I will get a Windows 7 machine in the near future - probably a netbook.

If you are thinking of making the switch, however, you should definitely read Dennis' article:  Lucky No. 7?
