Microsoft Windows 7 for Free (and Legal)

Perhaps this is something you don't want to do with one of your mission critical computers in the office.  But, Steve Ballmer, Microsoft's CEO, announced at CES that the company will be releasing the Beta of Windows 7 as a FREE download.  Windows 7 is Microsoft's successor to the Vista operating system which has received a tepid welcome, though Microsoft claims 300 million Vista users world wide.

By all accounts, Windows 7 is a big improvement over Vista.  So if you are an adventuresome soul and you have a spare machine with the horsepower, you will have the opportunity to do it with a legal and licensed copy (if you're on Bit Torrent, leaked copies have been available in the wild for a while now) as of this coming Friday, January 9th.

"Microsoft promises that the new OS will have faster startup and shutdown times, fewer security alerts, and will provide better power management leading to improved battery life on laptops."
