Line2 for iPhone and the Small Firm |

The Line2 iPhone App by Toktume (yes, we get the joke....) gives your iPhone a second line (or your iPad Touch a first line!) that uses either the AT&T connection or WiFi. The App brings up a near clone of the iPhone's dialer app with contacts, recently made calls and all the other things you would expect but connects through a second phone number. Since it is a VoIP service, it can give you connection in places where your regular cell phone connection is weak, such as inside one's home or office with a WiFi connection. The service is not free. It costs a little under $15.00 a month. However, as David Pogue points out in his IPhone App to Sidestep AT&T, if one is regularly making calls in a WiFi environment decreasing your AT&T service plan could save more than the $15/month. The app seems quite intelligent. It senses when WiFi is available and uses it, even switching seamlessly mid-call. While have not seen anything about this expressly, it stands to reason that this should work and be a big money saver for any travel out side of North America (for US & Canadian users) anytime WiFi is available for VoIP calls. I can see some definite benefit for the solo and small firm lawyer. Besides the potential money that can be saved, you can use your regular iPhone number for family and friends and have the second line be an office line. You can give it out or have calls forwarded to it. I am not certain that it works with Google Voice, but see no reason why it could not be a number that Google Voice forwards to. For even more, see David Pogue's thorough review in at the New York Time's website: IPhone App to Sidestep AT&T. I would love to hear from any solo or small firm lawyers who use Line2 (or similar VoIP options) about how you have put them to work in your practice. - Peter H. Berge
