Both hardware and software become obsolete and the result is your data may become trapped in a format or on a machine that is unreadable. Don't believe me, watch David Pogue's video:
What can you do? Be vigilant and be ready to migrate your data before it is unreadable. There is indeed a whole industry that has evolved to do just that: migration. The point is you need to look after your own data and move it on to new formats. Experts recommend doing so every ten years.
